Prices of food and drinks
Here’s an overview of how much it costs to drink and eat in Lisbon, both in restaurants or when you buy from supermarkets. Recent research showed that Lisbon supermarkets are the most expensive in the country (Porto’s are the cheapest). Some of the product prices are quite similar to retail prices in Madrid, Paris or even London while others seem to be more attractive, especially when they are regional (wine, for example). Prices may vary from shop to shop, depending on their location, but the list below should give an idea of the general cost of living. Tip: Jumbo is the cheapest supermarket chain in Portugal.
Prices are collected in the autumn of 2010.
Food and drink from restaurants and bars (Dollar quotes based on 1.38 Euro-Dollar conversion rate)
An average meal price in Lisbon is between €7 ($9.7) and €8 ($11.10) (either meat-based, fish-based or vegetarian)
Meal deal at ‘tascas’, the local equivalent of gastro pubs: €5 ($6.9) – €6 ($8.3)
Freshly squeezed juice: €2.90 ($4.02)
Draft beer: €1.50 ($2.10)
Cocktails: €3.50 – €5.00 ($4.86 – $6.9)
Espresso: €0.70 – €0.90 ($0.97 – $1.24)
White coffee: €0.70 – €1.20 ($1.66)
Tea: €1 – €1.50 ($1.39 – $2.10)
Soft drink: €0.80 ($1.11)
Pastry (‘pastéis’): €0.80 ($1.11)
Cheese/ham sandwich: €1.50 – €2.50 ($2.80 – $3.50)
Toast/slice of cake: up to €2 ($2.78)
